Digital Camcorder Buying Guide
Before you go and buy your new digital camcorder, you need to know what you are looking for. TopTenREVIEWS cuts through the jargon to show you what exactly each different camcorder does.
With all the choices and features available on today's digital camcorder market, buying a new camera becomes very confusing very quickly. Camcorders today store video in a number of ways. And each storage type has its advantages and disadvantages. I'm here to cut through the jargon and help you understand difference between MiniDV, DVD, HDD and FLASH Memory Camcorders. Each way of storing video has both strengths and weaknesses. Mini DVD camcorders are great because they make DVDs that you can take right out of the camera and into your home DVD player. The discs are relatively inexpensive, can hold anywhere between twenty and sixty minutes of video. One drawback to this type of camcorder is that you cannot edit DVDs directly. However you can copy the video files from the disc to a computer for editing. Another problem with this format is that the video is highly compressed to fit it onto the DVD which can result in lower video quality. Another popular camcorder is a MiniDV. These camcorders use a MiniDV tape which are economical depending on your quality settings can give you anywhere from an hour to ninety minutes of footage. For these digital tapes the video is transferred with little or no compression which gives you a great quality video for editing later. If you plan to edit your videos after you have shot them, MiniDV camcorders are probably your best choice. Additionally the MiniDV tapes provide a natural backup storage solution in case you somehow lose your video files off your computer. A fairly newer format for storing video on a camcorder is with a hard drive built right into the camera. Hard drive camcorders save money by eliminating the need to buy tapes or DVDs since all the footage is stored directly on the camera's hard drive. On average you can get about 10 hours of footage before your hard drive fills up. This can be inconvenient if you are not around your computer or another storage device to transfer the video to in the middle of a shoot. And lastly are flash camcorders that store video on flash memories drives. These camcorders are normally very small and take low quality video. The convenient thing about these cameras is they usually have a USB drive built right into the camera so you can easily transfer the files. Now you know what the basics are for buying your new digital camcorder.
